Helping you improve your home
When buying paint, purchase the best quality you can afford. Good quality paint will withstand wear longer, hold its color better, and look nicer overall from its first day to its last. Interior paint is one of the few products where price is a reliable indicator of quality. Unlike many products that have an inflated price based on status issues, the price of paint usually genuinely reflects the quality of the ingredients. Even if the initial price seems higher, you will need to repaint less often than you would with a cheaper product.
In general, paint ingredients fall into four categories, and the ratio of these ingredients determines the overall quality of the paint. While some alternative formulations are available, most paint is generally made up primarily of liquid, pigments, additives, and binders.
Liquid is generally either water or mineral spirits. The liquid portion of the paint allows the paint to be smoothly and evenly applied, and then evaporates, leaving a dry coating of paint. The nature of the liquid base determines things such as drying time and vapors, and also has an effect on the final finish.
Pigments are naturally colored solids that are suspended in the liquid base. Generally, these are minerals or other natural substances that are ground to a fine powder. If paint sits too long, pigments may come out of suspension and sink to the bottom of the can, requiring you to stir the mixture up before you can paint with it. One of the most common pigments used in paint is Titanium Dioxide. A higher concentration of titanium dioxide results in a whiter and brighter paint.
Additives are any of several substances that act to make the paint more durable and easier to apply. These substances may enhance the paint’s ability to stick to the wall and flow smoothly from the brush or roller, or with kitchen and bath paint they may enhance the paint’s resistance to mildew.
Binders usually either one hundred percent acrylic, or a vinyl acrylic combination. For most applications, a higher concentration of acrylic resin binders makes the resulting finish harder and more durable. Paints designed for play rooms and hallways, or for industrial use, usually have a higher proportion of acrylic binders in them.
If your paint can lists other ingredients that do not fall into any of these categories, they are likely cheap fillers to allow the paint to be marketed more inexpensively. These fillers tend to dull the color of the paint and reduce its lifespan. Additionally, chemical sensitive individuals will usually find that paints containing a lot of fillers will trigger symptoms more often or more severely than other paints made with purer ingredients.
Whenever possible, select high quality paint from a reliable retailer. If you have questions about the content of your chosen paint brand or need further guidance when selecting a paint type, ask your favorite salesperson for help in determining what product is ideal for your particular situation.
In recent times both home builders and owners have discovered the many benefits if using metal roofing. As a result this has led to a much larger number of new and existing homes making use of these materials and a wider array of metal roofing products being manufactured and available on the market.
The metal roofs of today should not be mistaken for the tin barn roofs of old. There are many reasons that homeowners are deciding to use these new materials on their properties. First and foremost, they last a very long time, in general far longer than materials such as tiles. Secondly metal roofing is extremely durable effortlessly withstanding high winds and snow. Finally it is resistant to fire, mildew insects and rot. This durability explains why metal roofing tends to come with such a good manufacturers warranty.
The makers of metal roofing are aware of how good and long lasting their product is and thus are able to provide a guaranteed warranty for between twenty and fifty years in most cases. When compared to tile and concrete forms of roofing, metal roofing is also very light weight.
Given the lightness of the material, it can be placed directly over more traditional roofing when it comes time for a roof replacement. The structure that this layering creates actually adds a lot of strength to the homes roof. Another advantage of metal roofing is the time required for installation which is significantly less than with other materials. This helps keep labour cost to a minimum and also allows contractors to get your roof in place in a hurry in the case of impending storms.
One thing you should always ask your contractor about is whether or not the roofing material they are using is no-combustible when placed in intense heat. Metal roofing materials are fully non-combustible and have been provided with an A rating for this strength.
Because of the highly reflective nature of most metal roofing materials less heat will tend to enter the home as it is deflected away, especially in the intense midday hours. When installed correctly a dead air space is created between your metal roof and the roof deck, this pocket will help insulate and increase the energy efficiency of the home.
A big disadvantage of metal roofing is the high cost, you could be looking at anywhere between $150 and $600 per square foot depending on what material you choose. The noise produced by rain falling on the metal is another downside to many, although some find it soothing. However there are new materials on the market today which contain structural barriers which can drastically reduce the noise created by falling rain.
The most commonly use metal for roofing purposes is still aluminum. While quite expensive, copper is also used quite regularly because it will not rust or corrode. There are other alloys coming into use as well that wear very well, these tend to be heavier than aluminum but can be a good option.
If you need to install a new door, you will have to choose between a number of common door styles. Door styles are primarily divided into two categories: pre-hung and slab. A pre-hung door comes with a door jamb and attached hinges, whereas a slab door requires you to buy or build the associated hardware yourself. Whatever type you use, door knobs, locks, and latches will need to be purchased and installed separately. Among pre-hung and slab doors, there are several types to choose from.
Insulated exterior doors are among the most common door types. These doors are usually manufactured to maximize both energy efficiency and curb appeal, and are especially popular in regions where heating and cooling make up a big part of the budget. Most of these doors are metal or composite wood on the visible surfaces with foam insulation inside.
Decorative storm doors add to the energy efficiency of main entry doors and also protect the more expensive, decorative entry doors from damage by the elements, children, or pets. These doors also improve home security by creating one more barrier that needs to be penetrated to accessyour home.
Sliding patio doors are excellent choices for small, cramped areas that have limited lighting and little room for swinging doors. These doors are available in sizes to fit most openings, and have a wide range of designs available.
Hinged patio doors offer the lighting benefits of sliding patio doors, but require that the room in which they are installed have enough space for them to swing open. These doors can be more expensive, but are aesthetically pleasing and add a touch of class and character to any room. They are available in either weather tight models for exterior use, or interior models that are used to divide rooms.
When deciding what kind of door you want to install, it can be helpful to employ any of the numerous home design software programs now available. This will allow you to input a photo of your home and try out as many different door styles as you like to see how they look before purchase and installation.
